Schema markup for HVAC websites
Structured data is how you tell a machine what your business does, where it works and what it sells. It matters more every year as search results incorporate AI-generated answers.
The schema types that matter for a contractor
There are hundreds of schema types. Six of them do nearly all the work for a heating and cooling business.
LocalBusiness or the more specific HVACBusiness type, on your homepage and contact page — but only if you have a genuine staffed address. If you operate as a service area business, use Organization instead.
Service on each service page, describing the offering and the area served. This is how you tell search engines you do emergency furnace repair rather than just “HVAC.”
FAQPage on pages with real, visible questions and answers. Marking up questions that are not on the page is a violation, not a shortcut.
BreadcrumbList on every page below the homepage, which also produces the breadcrumb trail in search results.
Review and AggregateRating, only where the reviews are genuine, verifiable and displayed on the page. This is heavily policed and inflating it is a real risk.
Article with author information on blog content, which supports the credibility signals search engines look for.

How we implement it
Written directly rather than generated by a plugin, so it stays accurate and does not break silently.
Audit
What exists, what is invalid, and what is missing. Broken schema is common and often invisible until a rich result disappears.
Core types
Organization or LocalBusiness, and BreadcrumbList across the site.
Service and FAQ
Every service page marked up, and FAQ schema wherever there is genuine visible Q&A.
Validate
Rich results testing and Search Console monitoring for errors.
Re-check
Validated again after any significant site change, since template edits break markup quietly.
Questions about Schema markup
Does schema markup improve rankings?
Not directly. It improves how your pages are understood and displayed, which affects click-through rate and eligibility for rich results. As AI-generated answers become more common, being machine-readable matters more than it used to.
Can I just use a plugin?
Plugins handle the basics adequately. They tend to produce generic Service markup and often miss area-served and emergency-availability detail, which is exactly the part that matters for a contractor.
Should we add review schema?
Only if the reviews are real, visible on the page and verifiable. Inflated or invented review markup is one of the things search engines actively police, and the penalty is losing rich results entirely.
What is HVACBusiness schema?
A specific subtype of LocalBusiness for heating and cooling contractors. It is more precise than the generic type, which is generally worth using where it applies.
